John Paul II Catholic School is proud to announce that juniors Abigail Clarke and Maddy Burke have been selected as delegates to represent JPII at American Legion Auxiliary Palmetto Girls State, one of South Carolina’s most respected and time-honored youth leadership experiences.
Each year, Palmetto Girls State selects young women from across the state who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, citizenship, and academic achievement. The program brings together hundreds of rising seniors for a weeklong, immersive experience in state government and civic engagement. Participants form a mock government where they run for office, draft and debate legislation, and learn firsthand how the democratic process works in South Carolina.
“Our students are chosen to represent JPII based on their character, leadership skills, and a strong desire to be part of the Palmetto Girls State experience,” said Principal Heather Rembold. “The scholarship opportunities associated with this honor are extensive, and we are so proud of Abigail and Maddie as they prepare to take this next step toward future leadership.”
Palmetto Girls State is more than a summer program—it is a springboard for future success. Many alumni of the program go on to receive significant scholarships and pursue careers in public service, law, education, and business. Selection as a delegate not only sets students apart in the college admissions process, but also provides them with a lasting network of like-minded peers and mentors.
“Being selected for Palmetto Girls State is a tremendous honor,” said JPII’s Director of Counseling and Student Support Services, Cara Buckland. “Abigail and Maddie embody the values of servant leadership that we strive to instill in all of our students. I have no doubt they will make the most of this opportunity and represent JPII with excellence.”
This recognition speaks not only to the talent and initiative of Abigail and Maddie, but also to the commitment of their families and the supportive academic environment at JPII. As these young women prepare to step into this formative experience, they carry with them the confidence, compassion, and conviction that define the next generation of leaders.
