Three Tournaments, One Weekend: Warriors Rise to the Challenge

The John Paul II Golden Warriors wrestling teams competed in 3 different tournaments this past weekend with the middle school Warriors wrestling team at the Hilton Head Lowcountry Championships on Friday, the JV Warriors squad at the Hilton Head Lowcountry Championships on Saturday, and the varsity team wrestling at the Hammond Holiday Hustle Duals Tourney.  At the middle school tourney, Everett Thiesen led the Warriors with a 3rd place finish. Thiesen lost his 1st match, then rattled off 5 wins by pin to earn 3rd place. Ben D’Orazio just missed placing in the tourney, winning 2 matches before losing by a close 5-3 decision. At the JV tournament, Seth Cano placed third at his weight class.

At the Hammond Duals Tourney, the Warrior varsity team finished with a 3-3 record, beating Heathwood Hall in the opening round 48-36, winning over Greenwood Christian by a score of 70-11 and finishing the day off with a win over Augusta Christian. The Warriors fell to last year’s SCISA State Duals Tournament Runner-up Ben Lippen by a score of 48-29, losing to defending SCISA State Duals Champions Cardinal Newman 76-3 and then falling to Hammond by a score of 57-23.

Individually, the Warriors were led by Chase LaFountain with a 4-1 record (3 pins & a forfeit win), Jack Duncan 2-0 (2 pins), Brody Farris 2-0 (2 pins), James Del Mazo 1-0 (1 pin), Adam D’Orazio 3-2 (2 pins & a decision win), Archer Dewig 3-2 (1 pin & 2 forfeit wins), Spencer Murphy 3-2 (1 pin & 1 forfeit win), Jack Hannagan 2-1 (technical fall win & forfeit win), Payne Campanella 2-1 (2 forfeit wins), Also, picking up wins were Nick Kessinger 2-3 (1 pin & 1 forfeit win), Isaac Borgan with 1 pinfall win, and Jase Reynolds & Francisco Cedeno with 1 win each.
