Rooted in our mission to form disciples and servant leaders, John Paul II Catholic School is thrilled to recognize three students who have lived out our SHIELD virtues through exceptional service to the community. Michael Fitzgibbons (senior), Roman Bodziony (freshman), and Gabriela Pavlick (6th grade) were each awarded the Silver Level honor at this year’s Hilton Head Island Mayor’s Youth Volunteer Service Awards.
"At JPII, we believe service is a natural expression of our faith and our commitment to forming disciples," said David Lima, JPII president. "It’s inspiring to see students from multiple grade levels stepping forward to serve with compassion, humility, and purpose."
The Hilton Head Island Mayor’s Youth Volunteer Service Awards ceremony honored 177 youth from across the region who committed themselves to improving the lives of others. From entry-level Bronze recipients to those recognized for the prestigious Call to Service award, the event affirmed the power of young people to lead with empathy and vision. Mayor Alan Perry praised the student honorees, noting, “These young leaders were recognized for giving back to Hilton Head Island in a big way—logging countless hours that have made a lasting difference.”
JPII students in grades 6 through 12 are encouraged to serve throughout their time at JPII as a vital expression of the school’s SHIELD virtues: Service, High Expectations, Innovation, Excellence, Leadership, and Discipleship. Volunteer service is more than an extracurricular activity; it is a tangible way students live out their faith and grow as compassionate, Christ-centered citizens.
Principal Heather Rembold shared, “We are incredibly proud of Roman, Michael, and Gabriela. Their commitment to serving others beautifully reflects the Gospel in action and our mission to build scholars with a soul.”
To qualify for the Mayor’s Youth Volunteer Service Award, students must serve at least 50 hours over the course of a year, between May 1 and April 21. Hours must be completed on Hilton Head Island and verified by a school administrator or service coordinator. Awards are given at four levels: Bronze (minimum 50 hours), Silver (51–100 hours), Gold (101–150 hours), and Call to Service (150+ hours). Applications require a log of service, a brief reflection, and a signature of verification. Honorees are recognized each spring by the HHI Mayor and Town Council.
