JPII Chess Makes Major Moves at SCISA Tournament

John Paul II Catholic School’s Chess Club continues to rise on the board—making bold strategic moves and gaining serious momentum at this year’s SCISA Chess Tournament. What began last year with just a handful of high school players has now grown into a competitive, spirited team of 15 Golden Warriors, representing both the high school and middle school divisions.

“This was a huge leap forward for us,” said Chess Club moderator Dr. Annie Chen. “To go from a small group to a full, dynamic team in just one year shows the dedication and passion our students bring to the game.”

A Day of Strategy, Stamina, and Standout Performances
The tournament challenged students to seven rounds of matches, using the standard Swiss-system format—a common style in scholastic chess where players are paired each round with opponents who have similar records. With 241 competitors from 30 schools across South Carolina, every match required sharp tactics, calm focus, and the courage to make the right move under pressure.
Our Golden Warriors rose to the challenge.

Two of JPII’s high school players clinched Top 10 standings after Round 6, a remarkable accomplishment in a field packed with experienced competitors. Even more impressive, our middle school players went head-to-head against high school opponents, showing poise and strong board presence throughout the day.

“Our middle school students held their own in a high school tournament," said Dr. Chen. "Their confidence and competitive spirit were incredible to watch.”

Top School Ranking & Players to Celebrate
Based on cumulative points from our top performers, JPII finished among the top-ranked schools at the tournament. Congratulations to our leading scorers: Jack Hannagan, Nate Moore, and Jonah Mast.

“These three players anchored our team’s success,” noted Dr. Chen. “But every single member gained valuable experience that will sharpen their play for future tournaments.”

Awards Pending—But Momentum Already Won
Due to technical issues with the tournament’s scoring software, SCISA was unable to conduct its award ceremony. Scores are being reviewed, and official awards will be distributed to schools soon.
But even without trophies in hand, JPII’s progress is undeniable.

“For a Chess Club established just last school year, our students showed tremendous growth, teamwork, and potential,” said Dr. Chen. “This is only the beginning.”

Checkmate, Future—JPII Is Coming for You
With growing numbers, rising skill levels, and a hunger to improve, the JPII Chess Club is positioning itself for many victories ahead. One thing is clear: the Golden Warriors know how to play the long game… and the next big win may only be a move away.
