Pop Band Rocks “Down Under” (and Tastes It Too!)

The JPII Pop Band class has been buzzing with excitement as students rehearse the high-energy Aussie hit “Down Under” by Men at Work. This classic 1980s anthem is full of catchy riffs and quirky lyrics—perfect for getting young musicians moving, grooving, and learning to play as a cohesive group.

To bring the music to life, the band took an adventurous detour into Australian culture with a Vegemite tasting, thanks to band director Victor Ney. Vegemite, a beloved (and sometimes bewildering!) Australian spread made from concentrated yeast extract, is known for its bold, salty flavor. "Let’s just say the reactions ranged from surprised to hilarious," observed Mr. Ney.

Beyond the laughs, these sessions build critical musical skills—timing, dynamics, teamwork, and stage confidence—that will serve students long after the final note. They’re learning to interpret and perform music with authenticity, while also gaining a deeper appreciation for how culture and sound intertwine.

As Mr. Ney puts it, “Music connects us to the world. Whether it’s a catchy hook or a spoonful of Vegemite, these experiences teach our students to listen, adapt, and create with joy.”

Vegemite or not, these Warriors are totally slaying their trip Down Under!
