Ninth Graders Embrace “Old Has Gone, New Is Here” at Spirit-Filled Retreat

With a retreat theme of “Old Has Gone, New is Here,” 85 freshmen from John Paul II Catholic School experienced a Spirit-filled day of faith, fellowship, and camaraderie during their class retreat at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Beaufort.

Inspired by 2 Corinthians 5:17 — “So whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come” — the ninth graders reflected on leaving middle school behind and embracing the newness of high school life. The day began with Mass and ended with a special time of quiet and reflection in Adoration. In between, the ACTS29 Peer Ministry Team, made up of JPII seniors, guided the freshmen through a memorable series of witness talks, small-group discussions, team-building activities (including tower building and tug-of-war), and prayer.

Campus Minister Deacon Brent Heathcott reflected on the spiritual richness of the day. “What our students experience in their class retreats is truly a unique part of their overall experience at JPII,” he said. “A retreat provides an opportunity for students to unplug and get away from our school campus for a day to learn more about Jesus Christ, themselves and their classmates. Once again, our ACTS29 seniors showed their heart for Christ by the way they poured themselves into this retreat experience for our ninth graders.”

From quiet moments before the Blessed Sacrament to bursts of laughter during group activities, the retreat offered a powerful reminder that God is present in every part of their lives. The freshmen were encouraged to trust the Lord with their gifts, their friendships, and their future as they continue growing in discipleship. The day was made possible through the support of our campus ministry team, our senior peer ministers, our faculty chaperones, Father Perry, and the families who continually nurture their children’s spiritual lives.

As our ninth graders return to campus, may they carry the grace of this retreat with them — leading with integrity, loving generously, and shining the light of Christ in every hallway, classroom, and community they enter. What a grace-filled and joyful day for our Golden Warriors!
