New Superintendent’s Welcome Message

Please read the below letter of introduction from Dr. Jason Slattery, our new superintendent of Catholic Schools, effective July 1, 2026. We look forward to his leadership and continued collaboration with us as we work to serve our students. - Very Rev. Gregory B. Wilson, Vicar General

Nov. 11, 2025

Dear fathers and heads of Catholic schools,

Over the last 10 years, most often when traveling with our six children in tow, my family has spent treasured time together in South Carolina. Never in all that travel did I imagine that the Lord would provide the opportunity of calling your fair state and the Holy City home.

Yet, probably within five minutes of meeting with Bishop Jacques, any harbored hesitation about whether becoming your next superintendent and moving my family such a distance south was really in God’s plan for us, simply vanished — a great grace. This side of heaven, there is no place I would rather be headed next than to the Diocese of Charleston.

I am so grateful to Bishop Jacques, Father Gregory Wilson, and the incredibly hospitable diocesan staff for helping me better understand this opportunity of serving together with you. A diocesan education office and the role of a superintendent exist to assist the bishop in his care and responsibility for creating, maintaining and improving the conditions for quality and faithful Catholic schools to flourish in the territory of a diocese. Working to help ensure that our team in the diocesan office supports the work of pastors and those serving in Catholic schools is a familiar road.

It is important to acknowledge the difficulty that leadership turnover presents, especially for those serving in Catholic schools, and you — we — have lived it. In my present assignment, where I have served for almost 11 years, I was the fourth superintendent in less than five years. Aided by grace, Catholic education is a project that relies on stability. Thank you for your perseverance and for generously sharing your gifts with those served by Catholic schools.

I am eager to greet and see every one of you and to listen and better understand the possibilities and struggles that the Lord has helped you to see for families seeking a Catholic education in your parish and school. Being a Catholic school in the mind of the Church is an invitation to cultivate cultures that value continuous improvement and open doors to all who seek what we alone offer, which I look forward to helping you with in the years ahead. The art of teaching and the work of leading is a gift in the world today that serves as a bridge for those seeking to know and understand the truth and joy that is found only in Jesus Christ.

Until we are together, please know of my prayers for all those serving in Catholic schools of the Diocese of Charleston. Commending you to the help of Sts. Thomas Aquinas and John Henry Newman, co-patrons of Catholic schools, please persevere.

In Christ,

Jason E. Slattery, Ed.D.
