Scientific Inquiry
Students in 6th grade have been learning about scientific inquiry and what skills scientists use to learn about the world. They took the skills they learned in the classroom and applied them through exploration and observation. Students explored the grounds of JPII, making observations and collecting data in order to create a map, one example of a model used in science. Students then took these maps and are turning them into 3D maps using recycled materials. Students are learning the skills to be incredible scientists out in the world and not just the classroom.
The Nature of Science
The JPII 8th grade science class has been working on understanding the nature of science and what makes a valid experiment. They learned about qualitative and quantitative data and practiced collecting various kinds of data, including taking accurate measurements. Students continued learning and practicing their skills by completing the bubbles and fizz lab. In this lab they had to determine which liquid would dissolve the effervescent tablet the quickest. Students needed to collect accurate data and determine if their experiment could be considered valid and reliable.
