Math in Motion: Exploring Slope with Hot Wheels!

Learning about linear functions took a fun and fast-paced turn as JPII students wrapped up the unit by designing and building their own slope ramps for Hot Wheels cars. By adjusting the steepness of their ramps, students tested how slope impacts distance, carefully measuring how far each car traveled and making thoughtful observations along the way.

“This type of activity helps students see math come to life,” said math teacher Nicole Schawang. “When students can build, test, measure, and reflect, they gain a deeper understanding of how slope works and why it matters. These hands-on experiences build problem-solving skills and show students that math is everywhere—not just on paper.”

Through trial, error, and plenty of excitement, students discovered that even small changes in slope can lead to big differences in outcomes. Assignments like this make learning engaging and meaningful, laying a strong foundation for future math and science courses while fostering curiosity, confidence, and a love for learning that will carry students far beyond the classroom.
