John Paul II Catholic School is home to a diverse student body, each bringing unique backgrounds, traditions, and perspectives. This year, JPII students have the exciting opportunity to be part of a new club celebrating that diversity—Culture Club. Founded by sophomore Leo Iskandar, the club aims to provide a space where students can learn about and appreciate different cultures bringing about a sense of community and inclusion.
"Culture Club is very important to me because it gives students a place to learn about and celebrate different cultures," said Leo. "I started it to bring people together and create a more welcoming school community."
At its core, Culture Club is about more than just learning about new traditions, foods, or languages; it is about creating meaningful connections. “In a world where misunderstandings can often arise from a lack of exposure to different perspectives, this club encourages students to engage in thoughtful discussions, broaden their worldviews, and develop a greater sense of empathy,” according to Jen Cohen, JPII World Language chair and moderator of the new club. “By sharing customs, discussing global issues, and recognizing the beauty of cultural differences, students will strengthen their understanding of the world around them.”
Leo envisions Culture Club becoming an integral part of student life at JPII. "In the future, I want to plan more cultural events, invite speakers, and work with other student groups to make our school even more inclusive," he shared.
Participation in the club offers personal growth opportunities as well. “Engaging with different cultural perspectives helps students develop valuable skills such as open-mindedness, communication, and collaboration,” said Mrs. Cohen. “These qualities are essential for success in higher education, the workplace, and life beyond school. By learning to respect and appreciate diversity, students become more compassionate individuals, embodying the values of kindness and acceptance that JPII encourages, especially through our core values.”
The JPII SHIELD core values are Service, High expectations, Innovation, Excellence, Leadership, and Discipleship.
Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of this new club is its potential for lasting impact. "My hope is that this club continues to grow and helps everyone feel valued and respected," said Leo. His vision is one where every student at JPII, regardless of their background, feels a sense of belonging and pride in sharing their heritage.
