JPII Students Earn High Marks and National Recognition in Advanced Placement Program

"When done correctly, academic rigor is an invaluable teaching approach that helps children learn to think deeply, make meaning for themselves, and become aware of their own learning process. As a result, students gain a life skill that can lead both to academic success and a lifelong love of learning." - greatschools.org article

The most invaluable tool to challenge our students to reach their individual potential is academic rigor. At JPII, we offer 8 Pre-AP, a total of 22 Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and an AP Capstone Diploma.

The Pre-AP courses deliver grade-level appropriate instruction through focused course frameworks, instructional resources, learning checkpoints, and collaborative educator workshops.

The AP course offerings, in which JPII teachers have been trained and certified to teach, include classes in a variety of disciplines including English, math, science, computer science, history, and visual arts.

Our students also have the opportunity to earn an AP Capstone Diploma while at JPII. This college-level program is based on 2 courses—AP Seminar and AP Research—that complement and enhance discipline-specific AP courses.

This past May, 133 John Paul II Catholic School students, representing 56% of JPII’s 9-12 enrollment, took at least one Advanced Placement Exam.  The total number of exams taken was 281, with 80% of the scores on these exams averaging 3 or higher out of a maximum score of 5.

In addition, 60 of our test-takers were recognized based on the below criteria. We applaud their achievements.

“This is a wonderful commentary on the willingness of our students to take advantage of these rigorous courses,” said Principal Heather Rembold, “as well as the dedication of our hard-working AP teachers and our other educators who prepared our students. Sixty of our test-takers in May were recognized as AP Scholars (40) with Honor (6) and with Distinction (10), AP Seminar & Research Certificates (14), and AP Capstone Diplomas (12).  We applaud their achievements.”
