John Paul II Catholic School is thrilled to announce that sophomore Marie Sophie Alvarez has been accepted into the highly competitive 2025 Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) Summer Program. This remarkable achievement reflects her academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, and dedication to global learning.
YYGS is an internationally recognized academic enrichment program hosted by Yale University for outstanding high school students from around the world. Designed to prepare students for leadership in an increasingly globalized society, the program brings together top scholars to engage in interdisciplinary learning, collaborative problem-solving, and exposure to cutting-edge ideas in their chosen fields. Participants choose from a variety of academic tracks, ranging from STEM studies to social sciences, humanities, and global affairs.
“We are incredibly proud of Marie Sophie for earning a place in the Yale Young Global Scholars Program,” said JPII Principal Heather Rembold. “Her acceptance into this prestigious program is a testament to her academic dedication, intellectual curiosity, and leadership potential. We also congratulate her parents on making education a priority and encouraging Marie Sophia. This opportunity will not only enrich her educational journey at JPII but also provide her with invaluable experiences that will prepare her for success in college and beyond.”
Marie Sophie will spend two intensive weeks at Yale University, where she will attend lectures by esteemed Yale faculty, participate in small-group discussions, and work on innovative research projects. She will also have the opportunity to interact with students from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds, gaining a broader perspective on global issues and leadership. The program is a unique learning environment where critical thinking, academic inquiry, and leadership skills are nurtured.
Participation in the YYGS program will provide Marie Sophie with a strong foundation for her future academic and professional pursuits, according to Cara Buckland, JPII Director of Counseling & Student Support Services. “Through the rigorous coursework, research opportunities, and mentorship she will receive at Yale, she will gain critical skills that will enhance her performance in high school, strengthen her college applications, and provide a network of like-minded scholars from across the globe," said Mrs. Buckland.
“Marie Sophie’s acceptance into the 2025 Yale Young Global Scholars Program underscores the JPII commitment to advancing academic excellence and developing students who are prepared to make a positive impact on the world,” said Mrs. Rembold. “We congratulate her on this outstanding accomplishment and look forward to witnessing the many ways she will apply her newfound knowledge and experiences in the future.”
