The John Paul II Catholic School Model United Nations (Model UN) club proudly participated in the 49th Annual Model UN Conference hosted by Winthrop University last week, achieving remarkable success and distinction.
This year, four JPII students had their Resolutions selected for debate at the conference—an outstanding accomplishment reflecting the depth of their research, critical thinking, and diplomatic skills. Notably, JPII senior Isabella Perez (representing Nicaragua) had her Resolution formally adopted by the Small Island and Developing States Committee, an impressive achievement that highlights her ability to craft practical, globally-minded solutions.
In addition, for the second consecutive year, Karoline Rustad, also a senior, earned the prestigious Distinguished Delegate award for her exemplary performance representing Ukraine on the highly competitive Security Council.
Moderator and JPII history teacher Bill Demude praised the students' efforts, stating, "Model UN is more than just a simulation; it challenges students to engage deeply with global issues, think critically under pressure, and collaborate across diverse perspectives. These are exactly the kinds of skills that will serve them well not only in high school but throughout college and their future careers."
Participation in Model UN cultivates vital academic and professional skills, including:
- Research and Analytical Skills: Students must thoroughly research their assigned countries, understanding complex international issues from multiple viewpoints.
- Public Speaking and Debate: Delegates must articulate their positions clearly and persuasively in committee sessions.
- Negotiation and Diplomacy: Students learn the art of compromise, coalition-building, and peaceful resolution of conflicts—skills essential for leadership roles in any field.
- Global Awareness: Model UN fosters a broader understanding of international relations, human rights, economics, and environmental challenges, preparing students to become informed global citizens.
“Our students represented both their assigned nations and themselves with poise, intelligence, and a spirit of genuine diplomacy,” Mr. Demude added. “They demonstrated the best of what John Paul II Catholic School aims to instill: integrity, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to making the world a better place.”
This year's JPII participants: Leo Iskandar, Angelo Iskandar, Alex Hahn, Trenton LaFountain, Isabella Perez, Lili Luthern, Millie Cornejo, Karoline Rustad, Aadi Patel, Michael Fitzgibbons, Delilah Waite Kerns, Ryan Bertagna, and Abby Clarke
As the Model UN program continues to grow at JPII, it stands as a testament to the school's dedication to providing students with opportunities to stretch their minds, practice leadership, and prepare for the complex challenges they will face beyond the classroom.
Congratulations to all our delegates for their outstanding work at this year's conference—and for proudly carrying the Golden Warrior spirit onto the world stage!
