JPII Faculty & Staff Begin New School Year with a Faith-Filled Retreat

John Paul II Catholic School kicked off the 2025–26 school year with its annual faculty and staff retreat at St. Peter’s Catholic Church—an inspiring day centered on reflection, community, and renewal. Led by former St. Gregory the Great youth minister, Mike Sylvester, the retreat encouraged everyone to embrace the theme: “Deciding to Start.”

“Sometimes the hardest part of any race is simply showing up,” Mr. Sylvester shared. “You’ve done that—step one. Now, we engage our students and one another with open hearts and faithful trust.”

Through stories, scripture, and meaningful reflection, Mr. Sylvester guided faculty and staff to ask important questions: Do we see Christ in our students? Do we see Christ in ourselves? How are we and God doing? Using the “Appointment Clock” icebreaker, JPII colleagues connected through four powerful questions inspired by the Gospels:

•    What fact grounds your identity?
•    What are you searching for?
•    Who do you say that I am?
•    What do you want Me to do for you?

Principal Heather Rembold reflected on the sacred call of Catholic education, inspired by a homily from Fr. Mike Schmitz: “It’s not about having all the answers on Day One. It’s about choosing to begin again—with open hearts, willing hands, and faith in the journey.”

From a light breakfast to a meaningful Mass and moments of fellowship, the day was a joyful start to the year. JPII faculty and staff were also introduced to new chaplain, Fr. Daniel Perry, who celebrated Mass. JPII alumnus Colin Doering ’20, who is currently discerning a call to the priesthood and is a seminarian for the Diocese of Charleston, was also in attendance. Their presence was a powerful reminder of the living faith community that supports and surrounds JPII.

The JPII faculty and staff return to campus today renewed, ready to say “yes” once again to the mission of forming students who live with purpose, lead with integrity, and walk with Christ.

Please remember the JPII faculty, staff, and administration in your prayers.
