JPII Earns National PLTW Distinguished School Honors for Third Year in a Row

John Paul II Catholic School is proud to announce that it has once again been named a 2024–25 Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Distinguished High School and Gateway School, marking the third consecutive year of national recognition for its excellence in STEM education and career readiness.

The PLTW Distinguished School designation is awarded to schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to expanding student access, engagement, and achievement in PLTW programs, including Computer Science, Biomedical Science, and Engineering. PLTW, a nonprofit organization empowering PreK–12 students across more than 12,200 schools in the U.S., equips students with in-demand knowledge and skills through hands-on, real-world learning experiences.

JPII is one of only a select group of schools nationwide to receive this dual honor. In South Carolina, it is one of just 11 high schools and 9 middle schools recognized this year for distinguished implementation of PLTW’s transformative curriculum.

“This honor is a testament to the dedication of our outstanding faculty and our school’s mission to prepare students for the future through innovation, inquiry, and integrity,” said JPII President David Lima. “We are immensely proud of the impact these programs have on our students’ academic journeys and future success.”

Leading JPII’s PLTW success are dedicated instructors Mrs. Andi Shaw, Mrs. Alice Wood, Mr. Luke Schatzle, Mrs. Nicole Schatzle, and Mr. Anthony Rossillo, whose vision and expertise continue to expand and elevate the program. Special thanks also go to Mr. John Cooney and the residents of Spring Island, whose initial $300,000 investment jumpstarted PLTW at JPII five years ago. Their ongoing support has made a lasting difference in the lives of countless students.

“Our PLTW students consistently demonstrate curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking,” said JPII Principal Heather Rembold. “These programs cultivate not only technical STEM skills but also collaboration, communication, and confidence—traits that serve them well in college and beyond.”

PLTW’s high school and Gateway programs empower students to explore future careers, engage in cross-disciplinary learning, and grow as innovative problem-solvers—positioning them to thrive in today’s dynamic and fast-paced world.
