Three coaches from John Paul II Catholic School recently had the opportunity to tap into the spirit of the Fighting Irish when they participated in a once-in-a-lifetime meet and greet with standout University of Notre Dame football players. Baseball coach Stephen Gaylets, football coach Shayne Milligan, and community lacrosse coach Ed Kenny proudly represented JPII during this memorable event, which celebrated athletic excellence, character, and the unifying power of sport.
The event featured Notre Dame football stars Jaylen Sneed (a Hilton Head Island native), Leonard Moore, and Billy Schrauth—three rising talents making their mark in South Bend. Sneed, a local hero turned Irish linebacker, shared his journey from the Lowcountry to Notre Dame Stadium, inspiring coaches and young athletes alike with his work ethic and passion for the game. Moore, a dynamic defensive back, and Schrauth, a powerful offensive lineman, also engaged in meaningful conversations with attendees, discussing not just football, but leadership, grit, and faith.
What made the event even more impactful was its focus on community, mentorship, and faith-based values—values that align closely with the mission of JPII’s Play Like A Champion Today program. JPII is proud to be a certified Play Like A Champion school, an initiative developed by the University of Notre Dame that places sports within the context of moral and spiritual formation.
Coach Gaylets, who helped implement the program at JPII, shared his appreciation for the opportunity: “Meeting these Notre Dame athletes wasn’t just exciting—it was affirming. Everything we emphasize through Play Like A Champion—sportsmanship, integrity, and faith—is what these young men embodied. It reminded us that our mission as coaches is about so much more than wins and losses.”
“As a coach and Notre Dame fan, it was incredible to talk with players who live out the Irish tradition with humility and purpose," he continued. "Jaylen Sneed’s journey from Hilton Head to Notre Dame is a reminder to our student-athletes that greatness begins with believing in yourself and honoring the gifts God has given you.”
The coaches returned to JPII energized and inspired, ready to continue forming student-athletes who not only play hard, but Play Like Champions. As the Golden Warrior athletic program continues to grow in strength and spirit, moments like these deepen the school’s commitment to developing young people of character, leadership, and faith.
Go Irish, and Go Golden Warriors!
