JPII Brothers Pursue Prestigious Summer Programs at Top Universities

John Paul II Catholic School students Ryan and Connor Brown are making the most of their high school years by pursuing nationally recognized, academically rigorous summer programs at some of the country’s most prestigious universities.

This summer, sophomore Ryan Brown will travel to Georgetown University to participate in the National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC) program in Intelligence and National Security. Designed for high-achieving students interested in careers in national defense, law enforcement, and intelligence analysis, the program immerses participants in simulations, crisis briefings, and hands-on activities reflective of real-world scenarios faced by global intelligence professionals. Students will engage in vigorous coursework, interact with experts from the CIA, FBI, and Department of Homeland Security, and develop key skills in critical thinking, ethics, and diplomacy.

Last summer, Ryan’s passion for leadership and innovation led him to Duke University, where he attended the NSLC Business and Entrepreneurship Program. There, he collaborated with peers in a fast-paced, team-based environment to create a company from the ground up. The program emphasized every aspect of launching and running a business—product development, finance, marketing, and strategy. Throughout the experience, Ryan received mentorship from industry professionals and top-tier business leaders, gaining valuable insights into the entrepreneurial mindset and what it takes to succeed in the business world.

His older brother, Connor Brown (Class of 2025), also embraced an academically enriching summer experience in 2024. Connor was accepted into Wake Forest University’s Summer Immersion Program in Health and Exercise Science. With a focus on healthcare career exploration, the program combined classroom learning, hands-on laboratory sessions, and field trips to cutting-edge medical facilities. From studying the biomechanics of movement to understanding preventative health strategies, Connor’s time at Wake Forest solidified his interest in pursuing a career in medicine or health sciences.

“These programs aren’t just enriching—they’re formative,” said Cara Buckland, JPII director of Counseling & Student Support Services. “Ryan and Connor have both shown tremendous initiative and curiosity, and these programs are helping shape their futures in ways that are deeply meaningful.”

Mrs. Buckland also noted the importance of parental support behind the scenes. “The Brown family has always placed a strong emphasis on academic growth and exploration,” she added. “Their encouragement, coupled with the boys’ dedication, is a powerful example of how families and schools can partner to create life-changing opportunities for students.”

With another exciting summer on the horizon, the Brown brothers continue to model what it means to be faith-filled, ambitious scholars, embracing every opportunity to grow in intellect, character, and vision for the future.
