JPII Announces Inaugural Varsity Lacrosse Season

John Paul II Catholic School is thrilled to announce the launch of its 24th and 25th varsity sports with the addition of boys and girls lacrosse. Spring practices for the inaugural season are set to begin at the end of January, with both teams led by experienced coaches eager to build a strong foundation for the program.  “Lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and we are excited to bring it to JPII," said Louise Sanders, JPII Athletic Director. "This inaugural season represents not only a new chapter in our athletic program but also a unique opportunity for our student-athletes to grow physically, mentally, and as team players. We’re proud to offer another way for our students to showcase their talents and SHIELD values."

Dan Kenny, head coach for the boys lacrosse team, brings years of coaching experience and enthusiasm to the program. "Lacrosse combines the best elements of other sports—speed, strategy, and teamwork. It’s a great fit for athletes from all backgrounds. I can’t wait to see our players embrace the challenge and excitement of this game."

Erin Brienza, head coach of the girls team, echoed similar sentiments. "Lacrosse is not just about competition; it’s about building confidence, resilience, and strong bonds. I am excited to introduce our students to the sport and help them develop both on and off the field."

The sport offers numerous benefits, from improving cardiovascular fitness and agility to nurturing mental discipline and teamwork. Lacrosse also helps athletes develop skills that can transfer to other sports, making it an excellent choice for multi-sport athletes. JPII joins a growing number of schools in the Lowcountry offering lacrosse, including Bluffton High School, Beaufort High School May River High School, and Hilton Head Island High School. The addition of lacrosse at JPII ensures that our student-athletes will have access to competitive local matches while helping to grow the sport in the region.

Both boys and girls teams are currently recruiting players of all skill levels. Students and families interested in learning more about the program or joining the team are encouraged to contact the athletic department.

"Lacrosse has something for everyone," said Coach Sanders. "Whether you’re an experienced athlete or trying a new sport for the first time, there’s a place for you on our teams. We can’t wait to see what this inaugural season will bring."
