Honors Spanish III Explores Afro-Latino Heritage for Black History Month

In celebration of Black History Month, the JPII Honors Spanish III class took a deep dive into the rich and diverse heritage of Afro-Latinos, highlighting the cultural contributions of individuals with African and Latin American ancestry.

"Students began by exploring what it means to be Afro-Latino(a) and the concept of diaspora, learning about the unique challenges and experiences faced by people with multiple ethnic backgrounds," said Jennifer Cohen, JPII Spanish teacher and World Language Chair. "They then researched and created informative write-ups on notable Afro-Latinos, including familiar names like Zoe Saldaña, Cardi B, Bruno Mars, Tessa Thompson, and Roberto Clemente."

Beyond just a history lesson, this assignment provided students with a broader perspective on identity, culture, and representation, fostering an appreciation for diversity within the Spanish-speaking world. Many of the students involved are also members of JPII’s newly formed Culture Club, founded by sophomore Leo Iskandar, and were eager to showcase these influential figures to the school community.

"By engaging in this project, students not only strengthened their research and language skills but also gained a deeper understanding of the intersection of race, culture, and history—knowledge that will help them navigate an increasingly global and diverse society," commented Mrs. Cohen. "Through meaningful lessons like these, JPII students are not just learning a language; they are embracing the stories and voices that shape the world."
