Science in Action at JPII: Where Curiosity Meets Discovery

Hands-on, minds-on learning continues to thrive in JPII middle school science classrooms, where students are not just learning scientific concepts—they are experiencing them. From chemical investigations to earth-shaking experiments, JPII students are engaging in dynamic assignments that build curiosity, confidence, and critical-thinking skills.

In 8th grade science, students stepped into the role of real-world scientists as they explored the difference between a mixture and a compound using water and brine as their test subjects. Through measuring pH levels, calculating density, and making careful observations, students applied scientific tools and reasoning to correctly identify each substance—deepening their understanding of pure substances and mixtures along the way.

“These types of labs are so important because they move students beyond memorization and into real scientific thinking,” explained science teacher Nicole Schatzle. “When students are testing, observing, and problem-solving on their own, they begin to understand how science works—and that curiosity and confidence will carry with them into future science courses and beyond.”

Meanwhile, 6th grade scientists brought their study of volcanoes to life with an exciting and creative eruption lab. Students constructed clay volcanoes and designed miniature villages at their bases to observe what could happen during a real volcanic event—connecting classroom theory to real-world impact.

“When students build, predict, and then observe the outcome, they truly feel the science,” Mrs. Schatzle added. “These experiences spark curiosity, strengthen problem-solving skills, and lay the groundwork for how students will think critically in future science classes.”

Through inquiry-based labs, creativity, and exploration, JPII middle schoolers are gaining more than scientific knowledge—they are developing the skills and mindset that will support their future academic journeys and inspire a lifelong love of learning.
