Golden Warriors Show Grit at LowCountry Championship Track Meet

The John Paul II Catholic School varsity track and field team laced up their spikes and headed to Hilton Head Island High School to compete in the highly competitive LowCountry Championship. With 11 schools in attendance—including SCISA rivals HHCA and HHP—this meet was no small feat. Fresh off Easter Break, the Golden Warriors faced stiff competition but showed incredible determination, recording several personal bests and bringing home more hardware.

Despite a challenging field, the boys team delivered a strong performance, clinching a third-place trophy overall behind powerhouse programs Beaufort High (1st) and Hilton Head High (2nd).

"Our guys came ready to compete," said JPII head coach, Shayne Milligan. "After a week off, it was great to see so many of them hitting personal bests. It shows their hard work and preparation are paying off."

Meanwhile, the girls team, battling a series of injuries that limited their numbers, still finished a very respectable 8th place, standing out as the highest-placing SCISA school in the women's division.

Coach Milligan added, "Our girls really showed heart. Even though we were down in numbers, they fought hard in every event they entered."

Male Top Finishers:

1st Place: Lukas Yackley dominated the throws, winning both the Shot Put and Discus, while Andrew Boyden captured gold in the Javelin.

2nd Place: Sebastian Frickel showed off his middle-distance prowess with strong runner-up finishes in both the 800m and 1600m, and Sean Phalen secured second place in the Discus.

3rd Place: Blake Hubik (3200m), Alan Wolf (High Jump), and Dante Aiken (Triple Jump) all rounded out the podium with third-place finishes.

Top Male Point Scorers:

Coach Milligan praised their efforts, noting, "Lukas and Sebastian are leaders for us. They not only score points but set the tone for the whole team with their work ethic and competitive spirit."

Female Top Finishers:

3rd Place: Miranda Moulton threw a personal best in the Javelin to take third place.

Top Female Point Scorers:

Miranda Moulton – 6 points

Caroline Ware – 4 points

Looking ahead, the Warriors have one more potential tune-up meet this Saturday at James Island, before capping off their season at the State Championship at Ben Lippen on May 3.

"We're peaking at the right time," said Coach Milligan. "If we stay healthy and focused, I believe we'll have a strong showing at States. I'm proud of everything this team has accomplished so far."

Go Warriors!
