Golden Warriors Shine on the Chessboard!

JPII is celebrating two incredible victories from the 2025 SCISA Fall High School Chess Meet where 241 competitors battled across the board in six strategic rounds.

GOLD MEDAL — Jack Hannagan, JPII senior
SILVER MEDAL — Nate Moore, JPII senior

Out of all competitors statewide, only four students won all six matches — and Jack was one of them. His flawless performance earned him a well-deserved Gold Medal. Nate followed close behind, claiming Silver with 5 wins, placing him among just 19 players to reach that high score. Jonah Mast was in the lead for the first 4 rounds but lost the last 2. Their results reflect outstanding focus, steady strategy, and unwavering sportsmanship.

“The sportsmanship shown throughout the tournament was truly outstanding," said Kelley Wannamaker, the SCISA director of members services. "The many handshakes, kind words, and congratulations exchanged among players warmed our hearts. Jonah, Nate, and Jack together brought our school team score (count top 3 players in the school) to the top 3. Unfortunately, SCISA did not do any team result this time.”

That spirit was a defining part of the day for JPII. “What makes me most proud,” said Chess Club moderator and JPII Mandarin teacher, Dr. Annie Chen, “is not just the wins, but the way Jack and Nate carried themselves. They played with courage, kindness, and respect on every square. Their success is a testament to both their skill and their character.”

Although technical issues prevented SCISA from determining fair team standings, the organization confirmed:

  • Gold Medals were awarded to students who won 6 matches.
  • Silver Medals were awarded to students who won 5 or 5.5 matches.

Medals will be presented at the Spring Chess Meet, and any students who cannot attend will have their awards delivered to JPII.

Checkmate, Warriors. Well played.
