A Farewell from JPII Principal Heather Rembold to President John McCarthy

Tonight, as we celebrate this wonderful Christmas season together, we also take a moment to bid farewell to someone who has been an extraordinary gift to our John Paul II Catholic School community—our President, Mr. John McCarthy.

John joined us five and a half years ago, back when our enrollment was just more than 200 students. Some might say it was the size of a small family reunion! Today, with over 400 students, we’ve practically doubled—and I think we can all agree, it’s John’s incredible leadership that’s made that possible. Though, let’s be honest, it might also be because he made sure everyone in the Lowcountry knew just how great JPII is. I wouldn’t be surprised if he handed out brochures at the grocery store.

But John’s impact has been about so much more than numbers. He has changed the face of our campus, literally. With his vision and determination, he didn’t just look at what JPII was—he saw what it could become. He made room for growth, led us through significant campus improvements, and laid the groundwork for exciting projects like the future STEAM Innovation Center.

Of course, anyone who knows John knows he’s not just a man of action—he’s a man of faith, kindness, and a genuine love for this community. Whether he was cheering on our sports teams, joining us for school Mass, or leading the charge on our strategic goals, John has always been fully present, with a heart for our mission and a commitment to our future.

John, your time at JPII has left a mark that will not soon be forgotten—though we do expect to still see you on campus as you serve in your role as President Emeritus of JPII. We are all looking forward to breaking ground and beginning to make visible progress on the Innovation Center. And as we make the final touches on the plans, we also thought it would be most fitting to plan for a plaque that could go on the outside of the building, that would read something like this: John McCarthy, President 2019-2024, whose vision and leadership brought this STEAM Innovation Center to life, inspiring future generations of innovators.

So tonight, as we send you off with our prayers, our gratitude, and a few Christmas cookies for the road, we say thank you. Thank you for your vision, your determination, and your unwavering belief in what John Paul II Catholic School can and will be.

Please join me in giving a big, heartfelt round of applause for Mr. John McCarthy—and maybe a little cheer that he now has to navigate retirement instead of a car line!
