Faith Through Art: JPII’s Lucas Shearon Earns Diocesan Recognition

The Diocese of Charleston recently hosted its annual Art Expo Competition, celebrating the creativity and faith of students across the region—and we are proud to share that JPII’s own Lucas Shearon earned an impressive 3rd Place Award.

This year’s competition challenged students to create an original work inspired by a parable from the Bible. Using oil pastels, Lucas thoughtfully interpreted the Parable of the Prodigal Son, capturing its powerful message of mercy, forgiveness, and unconditional love in one striking and beautifully simplified image.

“We are incredibly proud of Lucas and the intentionality he brought to this piece,” shared JPII art teacher Kate Lackey. “He approached the project with both creativity and reverence, carefully considering how to visually communicate the heart of the Prodigal Son’s story. His ability to simplify such a powerful parable into one meaningful image speaks to both his artistic growth and his understanding of our faith.”

We are so proud of the dedication, creativity, and heart Lucas poured into this work. His achievement reflects not only artistic talent, but also the beauty of integrating faith and the arts—encouraging students to express their beliefs through creativity while developing critical thinking, discipline, and attention to detail.

Congratulations, Lucas, on this well-deserved honor!
