 AP Chemistry Students Tackle Real-World Chemistry

AP Chemistry students at JPII recently put their analytical skills to the test in an engaging lab on Percent Composition of a Hydrate. Using precision instruments like digital scales, heat stirrers, tongs, and crucibles, students analyzed the compound Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate to determine the percentage of water within the substance. This challenging lab emphasized a fundamental chemistry principle: no matter how much hydrate is present, the percent composition remains constant.

In the lab, students heated Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate to remove the water molecules bound in the crystalline structure, leaving behind pure copper sulfate. This hands-on activity required students to accurately measure mass changes and calculate the composition to confirm that the ratio of water in the compound is stable, regardless of the sample size. This experiment allows students to see chemistry concepts come alive in a practical setting, a crucial aspect of advanced science courses.

"One of my goals with this lab was to show students that chemistry is about precise, careful analysis,” explained AP Chemistry teacher Luke Schatzle. “This lab emphasizes the need for accuracy in measuring and understanding molecular relationships. It’s this attention to detail and foundational understanding that will prepare them for careers in science, engineering, and beyond.”

For high school students, labs like these go beyond learning a single chemistry principle. Students develop valuable skills in data analysis, measurement, and scientific reasoning. Working with chemical compounds and lab equipment helps them gain confidence in their ability to conduct experiments, analyze results, and draw conclusions based on evidence—skills they will use in college-level labs and potentially in professional scientific settings.

“In a way, labs like these bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications,” Mr. Schatzle said. “Students begin to understand why exact measurements matter in chemistry and in fields like medicine or engineering, where precision can make all the difference.”

This experience has left students better prepared for the challenges of AP exams, college science courses, and future STEM careers. Through this hands-on exploration of chemical composition, they’re building a strong foundation in chemistry and learning how essential accurate data and methodical analysis are to scientific progress. This year’s AP Chemistry students are well on their way to becoming the next generation of analytical thinkers and innovators!
