8th Graders Step Back in Time on Historic Beaufort Tour

The recent 8th-grade Advanced US/SC History field trip to downtown Beaufort was a resounding success, bringing the past vividly to life for our students! Thanks to the incredible generosity and expertise of JPII parent Mr. Jacob Leonard, the class embarked on a wonderful, fun, and deeply insightful walking tour through the historic streets.

Mr. Leonard's passion for the history of Beaufort during the Revolutionary and Civil War eras was truly contagious. He expertly guided the students, weaving fascinating stories and historical facts into every step of the tour. Students gained a much richer understanding of this significant area and its pivotal role in our nation's history.

Adding an extra layer of engagement, Mr. Leonard brought the antebellum period to life with fun and interactive elements. Students were thrilled to don period costumes, instantly transporting them to another time. A special highlight was when Mr. Leonard presented a group of girls with fans and playfully taught them the intricate "language of fans" used in the South—a truly unique and memorable experience!

The tour culminated in a delightful and participatory demonstration of antebellum dance right on the Beaufort waterfront. Many students enthusiastically joined in, experiencing firsthand a glimpse into the social customs of the era. It was a joyful and engaging way to conclude a day of learning.

A huge thank you goes out to Mr. Leonard for sharing his time, knowledge, enthusiasm, and a bit of his personal testimony in Christ with our students. We also extend our sincere gratitude to Mr. Lewis and our dedicated bus drivers for ensuring a safe journey, and our wonderful parent chaperones who provided invaluable support throughout the day. This field trip was a fantastic example of hands-on learning, making history both educational and incredibly engaging for our 8th graders!
